What Makes Us Different

With over 20 years of experience in concrete and home building in Canada, I moved to Costa Rica intending to focus on renovations and building inspections. However, as I began inspecting projects, it quickly became clear that many builders here—some claiming to be professionals—weren’t prioritizing safety or quality. Over the last five years, I’ve dedicated myself to building and repairing homes to help clients realize their dreams here in Costa Rica.

Now, I’m expanding our focus to include more comprehensive project supervision, build inspections, and mentoring. We still take on select builds and renovations, but by shifting focus, I can be present on more sites, offering guidance and expertise.

I’ve seen more and more clients trust companies to build their homes while they’re not in-country. Without an experienced and independent overseer, this approach can be risky. Having a knowledgeable partner who understands the building environment in Costa Rica helps protect your investment.

We prefer to be involved from the very beginning, ensuring permits are filed correctly, insurance is in place, and quality construction is maintained from the ground up. But we’re also here to step in at any stage of the project, providing the guidance needed to get things on track and safeguard your vision.

We Strongly Believe In Giving Back 

As expats and builders, we recognize the impact we have on the local community. Buying land in these areas can inadvertently drive up costs for local residents, making it harder for them to afford property. Many locals end up living in run-down homes as a result.

To give back, we started a program in 2022 that aims to provide affordable housing for locals. We work with the municipality to acquire old homes or undesirable land at low cost, which we then renovate or rebuild to create safe, quality housing. These homes aren’t simply handed out; we use a rent-to-own model, allowing families to gradually own their homes. The rent collected is reinvested to support the next family, maintaining a cycle of support.

We believe in helping the local community preserve their dignity and pride, which is why we also work to ensure they keep some of their land for farming and self-sufficiency. This way, we aim to balance the scales and support the long-term well-being of the community.

Helping Our Local Environment

Quality Homes by the Black Sheep works with every piece of land we sell, and collaborate with new owners, the municipality, and various organizations to help reforest the area. Through donations, we also purchase properties that cannot be built on and reforest them. These properties are typically very affordable, and we obtain the trees from different government bodies. However, we still need to pay workers to plant and monitor the trees.

The workers and project overseers are hired from within the community, helping to support our neighbors and creating a positive atmosphere for expats moving into the area.

Where possible, we create paths and, once the trees are rooted, we allow people to enjoy the jungle and wildlife. This initiative began in 2022 and is constantly evolving, with the goal of continually improving these projects.
